LASU Halts Activities, Orders Immediate Evacuation of Hostels

The Lagos State University (LASU), on Saturday, shut down all its academic and other activities indefinitely following the ongoing industrial action embarked upon since Thursday by its general workers.

The university has directed hostel students to vacate by Monday until further notice.

his decision was made during a virtual Senate meeting on Saturday, after reviewing the developments regarding the strike.

It was the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Staff Unions of the university comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists that had declared the indefinite strike over unmet demands bothering on their welfare.

In a statement issued and made available to newsmen on Saturday by the university’s spokesperson, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the university observed that the core demands of JAC are directed at the Lagos State Government and not the management of the university.

It disclosed that based on that, the Management has, over the past few weeks, facilitated dialogue and pursued peaceful resolutions between the unions and the state government and that the state government has already convened a meeting comprising the university management, JAC’s representatives, representatives of the relevant ministries.

It further stated that the meeting was held in the office of the State’s Head of Service, Mr Olabode Agoro who also chaired it at Alausa on Friday, August 1st.

“So, at the said meeting, it was agreed that further consultations would be held, with all parties reconvening next Thursday.

“The University Senate therefore, after due deliberations, resolved that the 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, initially scheduled to commence on Monday, 4th August 2025, be put on hold and all other activities in the University be suspended until further notice.

“Additionally, it has also resolved that all students residing in the university hostels across the Ojo, LASUCOM, Epe, and Badagry campuses are to vacate the hostels lastest by 6:00 a.m. on Monday, 4th August 2025.

“And that members of the LASU community, particularly students, are enjoined to remain calm and law-abiding during this period.”
