Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday promised that his administration would commit more resources towards improving the welfare of military personnel protecting the nation’s territorial integrity
Tinubu stated this at Admiralty Estate near Mogadishu Cantonment, at the commissioning of a newly built military Barracks named after him and meant to accommodate over 600 personnel
While assuring that he would continue to provide whatever would be needed to ease the job of the troops, particularly those on the front lines, he stated it was essential to win the ongoing war against bandits, terrorists and others.
According to him, “Knowing that the Federal Government is always ready to provide what our troops need to fulfil their mandates is essential for winning battles.
You are our heroes, and I thank you for what you have been doing for this country.
“Your welfare cannot, and we will not compromise on it.
We will continue to commit resources to improve your welfare.
“What you all are doing for us is extremely remarkable
and appreciated and the only way we can show this is through continued support for men and women in our uniform”.
He charged authorities of the Nigerian Army to ensure adequate maintenance culture to keep the accommodation conducive for the personnel always.
“What we must do is continuous development with right maintenance and commitment to the welfare of our men and women in uniform,” he added.
Speaking earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Gen Olufemi Oluyede, lamented that over 40 per cent of the Nigerian Army personnel are still not accommodated, but assured that he would do everything within his power to reduce the challenges being faced.
He said, “Your Excellency may recall that on the assumption of the office of Chief of Army Staff, one of the critical issues at the table before you were the fact that about 40 per cent of Nigerian Army personnel are not accommodated.”
Giving the details of how the new Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks would be allocated, Oluyede said the barracks contained a total of 614 accommodations, saying both senior and junior officers as well as soldiers would be accommodated.
The Army Chief stated, “In specific terms, the project comprises 16 Major General Quarters, 34 Brigadier General Quarters, 3 by 20 Family Major to Colonel Quarters, 3 by 20 Family Lieutenant to Captain Quarters, and 6 by 30 Family Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Quarters.
“Others are 6 by 30 Family Corporal and Below Quarters, 40 by 21 Corporal and Below Quarters.
These translate to accommodation for 614 personnel consisting of 170 officers and 444 soldiers and their families.
Also provided in these barracks are three worship centres, sports facilities, and a powerhouse.
“The external infrastructure includes the perimeter fence with 15 entrance gates, gatehouses, umbrellas, groundwater supply facilities, access road networks, and hard and soft landscaping, all constructed to the highest standards.
“Although this seems huge, with the scale of accommodation deficits the Nigerian Army faces in Abuja, this is only but just a drop in the ocean,”.

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the Federal Government’s recent approval, through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), for a 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs.
NLC said the decision, coming at a time when Nigerian workers and the masses are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, is a clear assault on their welfare and an abandonment of the people to corporate fat cats.
According to a statement by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the labor center said; “Telecommunication services are essential for daily communication, work, and access to information.
Yet, an average Nigerian worker already spends approximately 10% of their wages on telecom charges.
For a worker earning the current minimum wage of ₦70,000, this means an increase from ₦7,000 to a staggering ₦10,500 per month or 15% of his salary — a cost that is unsustainable.”
The statement went on to say; “This hike exemplifies the government’s apparent ease in prioritizing corporate profits over citizens’ welfare.
It is shocking that the government approved this 50% tariff increase for telecom companies within a month yet took nearly a year to approve the recent minimum wage for workers, despite the rising cost of living and inflation eroding purchasing power.
This glaring disparity underscores a troubling reality: the government appears more aligned with the interests of wealthy corporations than with the needs of the workers and citizens it is meant to serve.
“We must ask: When will the government stand for the people it swore to protect?
When will the National Assembly rise to its responsibility and hold the executive accountable for policies that blatantly undermine the welfare of the majority? When will the common man heave a sigh of relief in Nigeria?”
The Congress added that it is not opposed to a tariff review but disagrees with the approved rate of increase.
“We therefore call on the government, the NCC, and the National Assembly to stop the implementation of this ill-advised hike to allow a reasonable conversation around it.
If the dialogue agrees on the need for the hike, then, we can all seek a more humane increase and definitely not this 50% hike.
“We on all Nigerian workers and masses to reject this unjustifiable tariff hike.
We urge citizens to prepare for collective action, including the possibility of a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services, to compel the reversal of this punitive increase. This is for our dignity, our rights, and our survival as a people.
“The Nigeria Labour Congress remains resolute in defending the interests of Nigerian workers and the masses.
We will not allow the people to bear the brunt of policies that further entrench poverty and inequality.
Together, we will do our best to resist this injustice and demand that government prioritizes the interests of its citizens over corporate interests.”
Netflix has announced price hikes across its subscription plans in both the United States and Canada, sparking reactions from subscribers.
The increase reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to fund programming investments and sustain its dominant position in the streaming industry.

In the United States, the standard monthly plan without ads will rise from $15.49 to $17.99, while the ad-supported standard plan will increase by $1 to $7.99.
Meanwhile, in Canada, the standard plan with ads will see a $2 jump, reaching $7.99 per month, and the standard plan without ads will climb by $2.50 to $18.99.
The premium plan in Canada will experience the sharpest increase, with a $3 hike raising the cost to $23.99.
For Canadian subscribers, the updated rates are effective immediately for new accounts, while existing customers will see the change reflected in their next billing cycle.

An Ogun State monarch, Dagburewe of Idowa Kingdom, Ijebu, in Odogbolu Local Government Area, Oba Sikiru Okuribido has established a special market in the community where residents can purchase food items at highly subsidized prices as part of measures to assist with hunger wahala in the state and to caution the effects of harsh economic conditions caused by the high cost of goods and services in the country.
The market, located within the community and stocked with goods worth over N500 million, is open to all residents regardless of their religion or political affiliations, according to the traditional ruler.
Oba Okuribido disclosed this while addressing journalists on Monday at his palace to commemorate his one-year coronation anniversary.
According to him, the market was established with the support of the indigenes of the ancient town (located about six kilometers south of Ijebu-Ode) to jointly alleviate hunger and reduce the financial burden on residents by offering up to a 50% discount on food items, including yam, garri, rice, noodles, and more.
He also revealed that within the first year of his reign, he had facilitated financial support amounting to no less than N100 million as soft loans to farmers, small and medium-scale business owners, and artisans in the community.
“In addition to this,” he added, “we have reorganized the Community Development Associations (CDAs) by splitting them into smaller units to strengthen our security networks, curtail crime and criminality, and address youth restiveness in our town. This has enabled us to enjoy relative peace.”
Oba Okuribido emphasized that these achievements were made possible with the support of the community’s people and particularly the Gbogunmi Ministry.
The royal father also explained the measures put in place to prevent abuse of the subsidized market by individuals who might attempt to purchase items cheaply and resell them for profit.
“For instance, we sell a 50kg bag of rice for N42,000, compared to the approximately N85,000 that the same size costs in the general market elsewhere in the country.
The only condition for buyers is that they must be residents of our community.
This means they must present a valid resident card issued by the various CDAs in Idowa.
People in the community know one another, which further prevents exploitation,” he explained.
Oba Okuribido also highlighted other achievements recorded by the community in the past year, including the payment of WAEC fees for no fewer than 60 students, facilitating scholarships for 23 students, and covering the cost of JAMB forms and preparatory lessons for 50 UTME candidates, all of whom are residents of the community.
The royal father further revealed plans to construct a more befitting palace for the community, noting that approximately N500 million had already been raised for the project, which is set to commence soon.

Following the Federal Government approval of a 50% hike in telecommunications service tariffs, Point-of-Sale (POS) operators in Nigeria may soon increase service charges also.
The Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN) disclosed this development, citing the impact of the tariff hike on their operations.
Ogungbayi Ganiyu, AMMBAN’s National Public Relations Officer, explained that mobile money agents rely heavily on telecom services, particularly data, for their transactions.
“The telecom tariff hike will impact the operations of our members.
I am afraid this may also have a multiplier effect on service charges,” Ganiyu said.
He added that while POS operators may try to absorb the additional costs, the financial strain could eventually force them to increase charges to sustain their businesses.
“We have not sat down and looked at the latest tariff hike,” he stated, indicating that further deliberations would determine the next steps.
The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has already vowed to challenge the Federal Government in court over the steep tariff increase, which marks the first adjustment in telecom charges since 2013.

In other to expand the capacity of exam centers where candidates take their computer-based matriculation tests, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promised his administration’s support to collaborate with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
The Lagos state governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this on Tuesday when he received top management team of the Board led by its Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, in a courtesy call at the Lagos House in Alausa, stressing that the intervention would raise the performance of admission seekers in Lagos.
The governor spoke on the heel of the shortfall of test centers being experienced by the Board towards conducting a hitch-free test.
It was gathered that applicants in Lagos account for 15 per cent of total candidates sitting for matriculation examinations every year, but the Board usually faced difficulties in conducting the test for applicants in the state.
The Board disclosed that the Mainland of Lagos was the most affected, with candidates in the burdened communities taking matriculation exams for 10 days beyond the standard period allowed for the exam.
Sanwo-Olu described Prof. Oloyede as “outstanding Nigerian” serving with uncommon passion and integrity, expressing the state government’s willingness to support the Board in raising the capacity of its testing centers.
“Having learnt of the inadequate testing facilities being experienced by JAMB in Lagos, the least we can do is to partner with the Board towards expanding the current capacity towards our own benefit.
We will look into the requests and provide sizable plots of land in Ojo and Ikorodu for the Board.
“The main beneficiaries of this intervention will be our indigenes who will take the matriculation exams in conducive environments that will enhance their performance and aid their ability.
“As a sub-national Government, we are ready to take the discussion with the Board forward; we will look for land in identified places to build testing facilities,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Prof. Oloyede thanked the Governor Sanwo-Olu for considering the Board’s requests and for pledging collaboration, saying the new testing centers, if approved, would also serve reputable agencies of Government in Lagos to conduct recruitment tests for their employees.

Central Bank Predicts Robust 4.17% Economic Expansion in 2025.
With the nation’s GDP that is expected to rise to 4.17 percent for faster economic growth, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that the 2025 economic indices indicate a positive outlook.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr Muhammad Abdullahi, Deputy Governor, Economic Policy Directorate, CBN, revealed this on Tuesday during the 11th edition of the National Economic Outlook: Implications for Businesses in 2025.
The hybrid event, convened in Lagos, was organized by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) Centre for Financial Studies in collaboration with B. Adedipe Associates Ltd.
Abdullahi said the nation’s 2025 economic projections remained optimistic with fiscal and monetary reforms already paying off, resulting in the GDP anticipated rise from 3.36 percent recorded in 2024.
According to him, the growth is anchored on sustained implementation of government reforms, stable crude oil prices, and improvements in domestic oil production.
Abdullahi also stated that stability in the exchange rate would play a crucial role in maintaining the positive trajectory, with the inflation rate projected to decline due to the impact of economic reforms.
“Achieving the targeted inflation rate of 15 percent in 2025 will require effective collaboration between monetary and fiscal authorities, alongside private sector participation for a stable economic environment,” he said.
The keynote speaker said that the apex bank would prioritize price stability and strengthen the financial sector to support SMEs and critical sectors for businesses to thrive.
Abdullahi noted that the nation’s evolving policy landscape presented both challenges and opportunities for businesses to thrive.
“The government is making deliberate strides to diversify its revenue streams and reduce dependence on the volatile oil sector.
“Through ongoing tax reforms aimed at broadening the tax base and improving collection efficiency, the government is working to establish a more sustainable fiscal environment.

NNPC has again raises petrol price across the nation.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, through its retail outlets, has increased the price of petrol from N965 to N990 per liter in the Federal Capital Territory.
Tribune Online reports that the increase is not unconnected with the rise in crude oil prices in the international market.
The Minister of Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, had last week during the inaugural Petroleum Industry Stakeholders Forum which was held in Abuja said deregulation has fully set in the sector as global oil price will now determine how much the price of fuel will be sold not only in Nigeria but globally.
According to the minister, the Forum came to be in order to bring all the stakeholders under one roof and to resolve all issues around oil production and availability.
“The whole idea is to have a one-stop shop where all stakeholders will gather together, address issues, concerns, evolve policies, build consensus so that the oil industry will grow very fast,” Lokpobiri said.

Recall that Naijahitz in its recent publications, reports that NCC The Nigerian Communications Commission gives an approval for Telecommunication operators to implement a 50% hike on existing tariffs, MTN, Glo, Airtel among others would now implement the hikes on calls, SMS and data rates within the country.
Naijahitz reports that the NCC, in a statement on Monday, announced the approval of a request by the network operators to increase tariff, however, capped the hike at a maximum of 50%.
The Commission in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, said the adjustment, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability.
“These adjustments will remain within the tariff bands stipulated in the 2013 NCC Cost Study, and requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis as is the Commission’s standard practice for tariff reviews.
It will be implemented in strict adherence to the recently issued NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024.
“Tariff rates have remained static since 2013, despite the increasing costs of operation faced by telecom operators.
The approved adjustment is aimed at addressing the significant gap between operational costs and current tariffs while ensuring that the delivery of services to consumers is not compromised”, the NCC said in the statement announcing the approval.
New 50% tariff hikes
With the recent development, Nigerians are going to pay more for phone calls, SMS and data — for the first time in 12 years.
Going by the 50% hikes, the minimum acceptable price for phone calls will move from N6.40k to N9.60k per minute. On average, the cost of phone calls will rise from N11 to N15.50k per minute.
For SMS, Nigerians will pay a 50% increase on existing charges of N4 per SMS sent.
Each SMS will now cost N6.
The 50% hike in data rate means Nigerians will see a hike in average price of N350 per gigabyte to N525 per GB.
Background
Prior to the recent approval by the NCC, the telcos have been hammering on how an increase in tariff is essential for survival of the sector amidst current inflation and other economic challenges in the country.
Naijahitzreports that the CEO of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, had threatened that the telecom company may shut down if the tariff is not reviewed.
Toriola, who said this in October 2024 during a tour of MTN’s facilities by Fellows of the Media Innovation Program in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, explained that the sector is facing severe financial strain, especially from escalating diesel prices required to power base transceiver stations.
“There should be no delusion; if the tariff doesn’t go up, we will shut down,” he said, underscoring the urgency of tariff adjustments to reflect current economic realities.
Like Toriola of MTN Nigeria, others including subscriber associations and network operators had also voiced their concern over the economic situation of the country and its direct impact on their operations.
One of them is the Chief Executive Officer of 9mobile, Obafemi Banigbe, who explained that the telecom industry has been badly hit by the current naira devaluation, forcing major telecom operators to declare significant losses.
Banigbe disclosed that the costs incurred by the telecom operators have significantly increased, citing TowerCos, which he said increased their prices by over 300 per cent, “this is an outside hike in diesel cost, insecurity, vandalism, maintenance of sites, infrastructure upgrades, among others,” the 9mobile CEO had said.
While the government agreed that the tariff hike was long overdue, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, however, believed more needed to be done by network operators to improve service delivery.
“We have conducted a study on the Sustainability of the telecoms sector. The result should be out in about two weeks.
This will reveal what we need to do to ensure we can support operators more for improved services.
“Beyond just the conversation, which is out there, which is about increasing the tariff, Yes, we think there may be a need for the hike, but lots more need to be done as a country to ensure that the sector is competitive and beyond just supporting them to be competitive, the government must support be investing in digital infrastructure as well,” Bosun Tijani stated this while speaking on a television program.

WHO made this known in a statement on its X account on Tuesday, emphasizing its crucial role in protecting global health, including that of Americans.
The organization highlighted its work in addressing the root causes of diseases, strengthening health systems, and responding to health emergencies, often in challenging environments where others cannot operate.
On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the United States to withdraw from WHO.
Speaking at the White House shortly after his inauguration, Trump criticized the organization, stating that the US was paying far more than China and declaring, “World Health ripped us off.”
This marks the second attempt by the US to exit the global health body. During Trump’s first term, the administration issued a similar notice, accusing WHO of being overly influenced by China during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
That decision was later reversed by former President Joe Biden’s administration.
In the new executive order, Trump directed federal agencies to “pause the future transfer of any United States Government funds, support, or resources to the WHO” and to “identify credible and transparent United States and international partners to assume necessary activities previously undertaken by the WHO.”
The administration also announced plans to review and rescind Biden’s 2024 US Global Health Security Strategy, which aimed to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats, “as soon as practicable.”

Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, is piqued, and has condemned the recent killings, sexual abuses, violence perpetrated against women, children and vulnerable groups in the country, saying Enough is Enough.
In a strongly worded statement signed by her Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Jonathan Eze, in Abuja, the minister also promised to, among others, strengthen national response for social protection of women, children, and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria.
According to the statement, the minister is deeply disturbed by the increasing cases of sexual assault, physical violence, emotional abuse, child trafficking and online exploitation of morals within schools, homes and communities.
“Enough is Enough! She declared” Violence against women and children must be stopped with immediate effect.
“We have a moral and legal obligation to protect our women, children, and other vulnerable groups from all forms of abuse and violence.”

A seeming uncontrollable s3xual urge which led to the destruction of the chastity of a sickle cell carrier teenager, Ngozi (surname withheld), has not only landed Peter Ugan in police cell at the Mabushi Division of FCT Police Command, but it has also led to the discovery of his positive Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) status.
Ugan, aged 34, from Ogoja in Cross River State, was taken into custody by detectives from Mabushi Division on Monday, January 6, after he was almost lynched by a mob.
He had lured the girl into a room and deflowered her.
It was learnt that while committing the rape, Ugan tore into the girl so much that she started bleeding non-stop.
Apparently aware of the gravity of his act, Ugan locked Ngozi inside the room so that she would not leave to expose him and went to purchase medications not prescribed by any doctor for the girl.
His aim, as he later told Nigerian Tribune, was to stop the bleeding and ease the excruciating pain the girl was in.
Information gathered revealed that Ngozi, who was staying with her aunt in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, came to Abuja to register at the Government Day Secondary School, Mabushi, to complete her secondary school education when the incident occurred.
The first week she came, Ugan reportedly approached her for dating but being a young girl, she started avoiding him.
On January 6, 2025, Ugan was said to have come to the room of his friend, Isaac, who lives in one of the uncompleted buildings in a compound whose owner is late.
Though the suspect lived far from the compound, it was said that he used to come to the friend’s house to cook whenever he didn’t have kerosene or some ingredients.
The friend used to do the same at Ugan’s house when he’s also stuck.
On this fateful day, Ngozi, who lives with her parents in the same large compound with Ugan’s friend, was returning the plate her sister bought food with from Meshai and when he saw her passing by, he called her to help him buy sachet water.
The 17-year-old girl, who respected someone older than her, went to collect money to buy the water but got more than she bargained for. Ugan, noticing that the house was quiet, reportedly dragged the girl inside, pushed her to the floor and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
By the time he pulled his organ out of her, blood started gushing from her private part.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that Ugan locked Ngozi inside, went out and returned with some medications for her to take.
He also started cleaning her legs when he saw that the blood was still flowing nonstop. Thereafter, he allowed her to leave.
On her return home, her mother, Mrs Elizabeth Aroh, seeing her daughter’s condition, became distraught.
It was said that Ugan was about to escape when the mob caught up with him and beat him black and blue.
A credible source told Nigerian Tribune that the suspect would have been killed but for some neighbors who made a distress call to the FCT police command to come to his rescue.
Promptly, CP Olatunji Disu directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Mabushi Division to go to the scene where the suspect was rescued and taken into custody.
The girl’s mother also brought her to the police station, while she was still bleeding profusely.
The girl reportedly collapsed and fainted twice and was rushed to the emergency unit at Maitama General Hospital.
When it was too much to handle by those on duty that night, Nigerian Tribune learnt that a doctor was called from Nyanya Hospital to perform surgery on her to stop the bleeding.
It was further gathered that Ngozi had to be transfused with two pints of blood for her to stabilize.
As it is usually done, the Investigating Police Officer took the suspect to the hospital for tests.
To the shock of all, the result of the tests conducted on Ugan showed that he tested positive to HIV.
That again caused an emotional breakdown for the girl’s mother.
Ugan’s brother, who spoke with the police said that he had noticed the suspect’s emaciated looks before the incident and had told him to go for tests.
During interrogation, Ugan told the police that he didn’t know he was HIV positive because he still had some tests six months prior to that time.
In an interview, however, Ugan, who disclosed that he was working as a Front Desk Officer in an eatery, claimed that Ngozi was his girlfriend.
He said: “She (Ngozi) was my girlfriend.
I approached her for dating, and she accepted.
I started the relationship with her over two weeks before the incident.
On January 6, I went to my friend’s house to cook, and she came to visit me when she saw me. My friend lives in the same premises with her parents.
“So, I locked the door and went to get some medications like Flagyl, Buscopan and Diclofenac.
I bought malt drink, and she took the medicines.
I bought another food for her.
She washed up and stood up, saying that she was going.
“After she left, I went to my own residence.
I tried to explain to my cousin what happened, and he told me that we would need to go to her parents’ house to explain things and offer to take care of her if there’s need for proper treatment.
“We were about to go when I saw people, four security men, the girl’s mother and her siblings.
I was taken to the police station and detained.
The following day, I was brought out and taken for test.”
When asked why he penetrated the victim when he could feel that she was a virgin, the suspect admitted: “It was a little bit hard but the condom I used was oily and I didn’t really feel the obstacle.
It was when I withdrew that I saw it was that much.”
Concerning his questioning the girl on why she did not tell him she was a virgin after he was done with the sexual act, he was asked if she did not cry out in pain for him to know how she felt.
His response was: “I didn’t see her cry before I penetrated her, but she was very stiff and squeezing her face and hands.” On why he continued after seeing her in pain, the suspect had no answer.
Nigerian Tribune also inquired whether he had knowledge of medical practice for him to know medications to buy for the girl.
He however said that he got the prescription from a chemist.
He stated that he didn’t know the girl has sickle cell disease until he got to the police station.
He added that he didn’t know he was HIV positive until he was taken for a test by the police.
“I thought her looks were natural, I didn’t know she has sickle cell disease. Also, I didn’t know I was HIV positive.
The Police took me to the hospital for tests and when the results were out, I was told that I was HIV-positive.
Honestly, I didn’t know I had it in my system.
I used condom because I didn’t want to get her pregnant.
I was not also ready to start a family as I don’t have the capacity for now,” he said.

Minutes after taking office on Monday, Donald Trump administration has declared the shutdown of the CBP One app, a mobile platform that allowed migrants to schedule appointments at the U.S.-Mexico border.
US 47th President Donald Trump gives this order shortly after taking office on Monday and the app’s deactivation by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials immediately voided all pending appointments for migrants without visas who had been seeking legal entry into the United States.
This decision signals the administration’s intent to enforce stricter border measures, despite a noted decline in migration figures over the last six months.
According to CBP data, 96,048 migrants were encountered at the border in December, with 48,722 attempting formal admission at legal ports of entry.
For comparison, in January 2021—coinciding with former President Biden’s inauguration—CBP reported 78,414 encounters at the border, of which only 3,098 migrants presented at legal entry points. The rest were apprehended after crossing the border illegally.
CBP One had been a key part of Biden’s approach to guiding migrants toward legal pathways for entry.
Its removal under the Trump administration is part of a larger policy shift to reinstate more restrictive measures, including the reintroduction of the Migrant Protection Protocols, commonly known as the “remain in Mexico” policy.
Under this program, approximately 70,000 third-country nationals were sent back to Mexico to await decisions on their asylum applications over a two-year period.

Naijahitz reports that, while addressing young conservatives during an event in Phoenix, Arizona, in December 2024, Trump outlined plans to roll back LGBTQ rights and enforce strict policies.
“I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools,” Trump told attendees.
He further vowed to “keep men out of women’s sports,” reiterating that recognizing only two genders would be the “official policy of the United States government.”

The app’s deactivation by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials immediately voided all pending appointments for migrants without visas who had been seeking legal entry into the United States.
This decision signals the administration’s intent to enforce stricter border measures, despite a noted decline in migration figures over the last six months.
According to CBP data, 96,048 migrants were encountered at the border in December, with 48,722 attempting formal admission at legal ports of entry.
For comparison, in January 2021—coinciding with former President Biden’s inauguration—CBP reported 78,414 encounters at the border, of which only 3,098 migrants presented at legal entry points.

CBP One had been a key part of Biden’s approach to guiding migrants toward legal pathways for entry.
Its removal under the Trump administration is part of a larger policy shift to reinstate more restrictive measures, including the reintroduction of the Migrant Protection Protocols, commonly known as the “remain in Mexico” policy.
Under this program, approximately 70,000 third-country nationals were sent back to Mexico to await decisions on their asylum applications over a two-year period.
President Trump is also expected to sign ten executive orders today targeting border policy, which include dismantling initiatives introduced during the Biden era.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to grant approval for tariff adjustment request by Network operators in response to prevailing market conditions.
This is pursuant to its power under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 (NCA) to regulate and approve tariff rates and charges by telecommunications operators.
The NCC in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, said the adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50 per cent of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability.
“These adjustments will remain within the tariff bands stipulated in the 2013 NCC Cost Study, and requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis as is the Commission’s standard practice for tariff reviews.
It will be implemented in strict adherence to the recently issued NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024.
“Tariff rates have remained static since 2013, despite the increasing costs of operation faced by telecom operators.
The approved adjustment is aimed at addressing the significant gap between operational costs and current tariffs while ensuring that the delivery of services to consumers is not compromised”, the statement said.
These adjustments, according to NCC, will support the ability of operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity, including better network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage.
Recognizing the concerns of the public, this Commission said the decision was made after extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the public and private sectors.
“The NCC has prioritized striking a balance between protecting telecom consumers and ensuring the sustainability of the industry, including the thousands of indigenous vendors and suppliers who form a critical part of the telecommunications ecosystem.
“The NCC recognizes the financial pressures faced by Nigerian households and businesses and remains deeply empathetic to the impact of tariff adjustments.
To this end, the Commission has mandated that operators implement these adjustments transparently and in a manner that is fair to consumers.
Operators are also required to educate and inform the public about the new rates while demonstrating measurable improvements in service delivery.
“Additionally, the NCC reaffirms its dedication to fostering a resilient, innovative, and inclusive telecommunications sector.
Beyond protecting consumers, the Commission’s actions are designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry, support indigenous vendors and suppliers, and promote the overall growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.
“As a regulator, the NCC will continue to engage with stakeholders to create a telecommunications environment that works for everyone—one that protects consumers, supports operators, and sustains the ecosystem that drives connectivity across the nation”, the statement added.
