SECURITY operatives working on the trail of extremist elements and insurgents have foiled a plot by terrorists of Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) to establish a strategic base in Oyo State for the coordination of their activities in Oyo, Osun, and Kwara States.
Independent sources spoken to by the Nigerian Tribune confirmed that ISWAP members fleeing Maiduguri, Borno State had linked up with one of their members who operates around the Oke-Ogun axis in the Northern parts of Oyo State, to comb strategic locations where a coordinating base that would be responsible for operations in Oyo, Kwara, and Osun States could be set up.
It was learned that the said loyalist of ISWAP had been linked with kidnapping and other criminal activities around Oke-Ogun and had started making preparations for the establishment of a base in the Afijio local government area of Oyo State.
It was gathered that security agents got wind of his plan after he held a meeting with some members somewhere in Osun State, after which a number of the gang members were arrested.
Sources said that the link for the group is based in Oke Ogun, however, escaped the arrest and moved to the old Oyo national park, which links the Kamoko forest that stretches from Kaduna to Niger and Kwara States and also links the Old Oyo State in Oke Ogun axis.
The arrest of some of the insurgents by security men operating in Oyo and Osun States was, however, said to have resulted in the recovery of several AK 47 rifles, and a hot pursuit of the linkman said to have stayed in Ago Are town in Oyo State for some time
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State said on Monday that some insurgents fleeing from the North had attempted to set up camps near Fashola Farms in Oyo State.
Sources told the Nigerian Tribune that the site mentioned by the governor, which was initially targeted as a suitable location is about five kilometers from Fashola Farms but that security agents have since blocked the secret plot.
“The Kamoko forest which stretches from Kaduna all through Niger and links Kwara and Oyo States through Old Oyo National Park is the route being relied upon by these terrorists to make their way into the Southwest.
“They intend to establish a base around the South-West and when security men got the hints, a hot pursuit was undertaken, leading to some arrests,” a source stated, adding that every effort was being made to neutralize the plot of the terrorists,” said the source.
Another independent source said that the terrorists’ linkman in Oke Ogun had planned to locate a suitable place ahead of a meeting of his collaborators and that the operatives had bursted the plot and scattered the bid for the secret base.
As a result of the development, it was learned that security agencies across the Northwest state of Kaduna, as well as North Central states of Niger and Kwara, and the Southwest States of Oyo, Osun, and Ogun States, are already placed on red alert to forestall any plot to establish a camp or base around the Southwest.
In another development, sources told Nigerian Tribune that security agents have arrested a traditional worshiper in Iseyin, Oyo State, for trying to incite religious disharmony.
It was gathered that the man was trying to dispute some claims in the Holy Quran and equally plans to extend the same treatment to the Holy Bible as a way of igniting confrontation among adherents of the different religions in parts of Oyo State.
Though the man was said to have escaped to Lekki, in Lagos State, Security agencies in Oyo and Ogun States were said to have worked assiduously to get him arrested.

Senators on Thursday continued to raise concerns about the performance of the 2024 Budget.
At a session with Wale Edun and Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Finance and Budget Planning, respectively, lawmakers on the Senate Committee on Appropriations demanded explanations on proceeds from the removal of the fuel subsidy and transparency in the performance of Government-Owned Enterprises.
Findings revealed that at the Joint Committees on Appropriations of both Chambers of the National Assembly on the defense of the 2024 Budget, the lawmakers had on Wednesday raised observations on the huge discrepancies in the size of the Recurrent Expenditure relative to Capital Expenditure.
At the Thursday meeting with the Ministers in continuation of the 2024 Budget defense, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, asked the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to speak to issues that have agitated the minds of lawmakers: capital expenditure performance and the utilization of funds saved from the removal of the fuel subsidy.
Not impressed with his explanation, Senator Abdul Ningi pointedly asked the finance minister to provide the figures on proceeds from the removal of the fuel subsidy.
The Senator representing Bauchi Central also requested the actual sum spent on debt servicing in the 2024 Budget.
He said, “I have listened to the submissions of the Ministers, and I must say my concerns remain unaddressed.
As an Appropriation Committee, we are tasked with overseeing budgetary matters, and many of us here are chairpersons of committees that will carry this presentation back to our respective teams.
“In your opening remarks, Mr Chairman, you referenced budget performance, but we are yet to hear specific figures or percentages regarding capital expenditure and recurrent expenditure.
What is the current budget performance? These details are critical for our deliberations and for informing the larger public.
“On the removal of fuel subsidies, we have not been told how much has been saved, how these savings have been utilized, or what projections are in place.
Similarly, debt servicing remains a grey area.
How much debt did we service in 2024, what are the projections for 2025, and how does this impact the economy?
“Additionally, the 2024 budget’s performance was extended to June 2025.
Can the Minister of Finance assure us that this extension will yield tangible benefits for the economy?

Senator representing Lagos East, Adetokunbo Abiru, who commended the improvements in revenue collection in the third quarter of 2024, however, alleged that the independent revenues of Government-Owned Enterprises are shrouded in secrecy.

An overwhelmed Wale Edun requested an executive session with the Senators, prompting the lawmakers to ask the journalists to leave the Senate Committee room.
Before the session dissolved into a closed-door session, Senator representing Borno North and Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Monguno, attributed the delay in budget execution to what he called excessive concentration of power in the Office of the Accountant General.
He said: “There is a school of thought suggesting that one of the major obstacles to the successful implementation of the capital component of the budget is the introduction of the ‘bottom-top approach’ by the current administration.
This policy has centralized payment and processing in the Office of the Accountant General, replacing the previous decentralized system where ministries, departments, and agencies handled these tasks independently.
“This centralization has reportedly introduced significant bureaucratic delays and bottlenecks, hindering the smooth execution of the budget.
Furthermore, it is alleged to have created opportunities for corruption due to the excessive concentration of power in the Office of the Accountant General.
“I believe it is crucial to re-evaluate this ‘bottom-top approach’ policy with the aim of facilitating more efficient implementation of the capital component of the budget.
Doing so will ensure that the dividends of democracy are delivered directly to the vast majority of our people.”
Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, raised concern over the delay in budget submission by the Executive arm, which he noted constitutes a threat to the January-December Budget cycle.
The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old Princess Okolie and her boyfriend Prince Atigbi for staging a fake kidnapping to extort the sum of two million from her parents.
The incident began on December 30, 2024, when Princess left her home and failed to return, prompting her mother to report her disappearance to the police.
The police received a call from an alleged kidnapper demanding a ransom of N2 million for her release.
However, upon investigation, the police discovered that the kidnapping was a ruse orchestrated by Princess and her boyfriend to extort money from her parents.
Prince Atigbi was arrested after collecting the ransom money, and he confessed that he was not a genuine kidnapper but had acted according to a plan devised by Princess.
The lady also admitted to faking her own kidnapping to extort money from her parents. According to her, when it was time to go home, her boyfriend didn’t have transport fare for her, so they conspired to call her parents and tell them she had been kidnapped.
Both suspects are currently in police custody, and the ransom money has been recovered.

Over 2,000 homes, businesses, and other buildings have been damaged or destroyed, and at least five people are dead in wildfires sweeping through communities across Los Angeles County.
The five bodies were discovered in three structures in Altadena, where the Eaton fire erupted Tuesday night, leaving residents with little time to escape. The L.A.
County Fire Department estimates that over 1,000 structures have been destroyed in the Palisades fire, with another 1,000 either damaged or destroyed in the Eaton fire.
Firefighting resources faced additional strain when the Sunset fire ignited in the Hollywood Hills area around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, prompting evacuations in the Runyon Canyon area.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the Palisades fire had charred more than 15,800 acres, reaching the Pacific Coast Highway and consuming multimillion-dollar homes along this iconic route. L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone reported that, while there were no fatalities in the Palisades fire, many residents who did not evacuate sustained significant injuries, as did first responders on the fire line.
The Eaton fire, which broke out Tuesday night, had burned 10,600 acres near Altadena and Pasadena by Wednesday evening, exacerbated by wind gusts reaching up to 99 mph, according to Angeles National Forest staff on X.
The causes of death for the five individuals found in the Eaton fire remain undetermined. Marrone noted during a Wednesday evening news conference that the agency has requested K-9s trained in human remains detection to ensure no other victims are unaccounted for.
Meanwhile, the Hurst fire quickly spread amid high winds overnight in Sylmar, burning approximately 700 acres by Wednesday evening.
The causes of all the fires are currently under investigation, and none are contained as of now.
“What we saw here in the last 24 hours is unprecedented,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated Wednesday afternoon. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
On Wednesday, roughly 2,500 firefighters battled the Eaton and Palisades blazes, facing challenging conditions fueled by extreme winds, parched brush, and low humidity.
As these large fires continued, crews across the region worked to contain smaller blazes that erupted in Fontana, Sun Valley, and Brentwood.
L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna reported that 70,000 residents were under evacuation orders or warnings in the Eaton fire area, while 60,000 residents faced similar notices in the Palisades fire region.
Three individuals have been arrested on suspicion of looting in the evacuation zones.

Joe Biden has expressed boldness that he would have defeated Donald Trump and secured re-election in November had he remained in the presidential race.
In an exclusive interview with USA Today, Biden admitted to doubts about his stamina for another four years in office.
“So far, so good,” Biden, 82, said. “But who knows what I’m going to be when I’m 86 years old?”
During the wide-ranging interview with Susan Page, Biden revealed he was still contemplating pre-emptive pardons for figures aligned against Trump, including former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney and ex-health official Dr Anthony Fauci.
He recounted a meeting with Trump in the Oval Office shortly after the election, where he conveyed his perspective on pardons.
“I tried to make it clear that there was no need, and it was counterintuitive for his interest to go back and try to settle scores,” Biden stated.
According to him, Trump “just basically listened” and refrained from pushing back. Biden added that his final decision would depend on Trump’s cabinet picks.
Biden also noted that Trump had been “complimentary” about his economic performance during the same meeting.
“He [Trump] thought I was leaving with a good record,” Biden remarked.
The USA Today interview, published on Wednesday, marks Biden’s sole exit interview with a print publication since announcing his withdrawal from the race on 21 July.
Media access to Biden has been heavily restricted, and he has not held a press conference since stepping aside.
In the interview, Biden defended his controversial full and unconditional pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, who was facing criminal charges for tax evasion and unlawfully purchasing a firearm.
Despite previously pledging not to intervene, Biden insisted the pardon was warranted.
Biden, who began his political career in 1972 as a US senator, has faced mounting criticism, including from within his party, over his delayed decision to exit the presidential race amidst concerns about his age and mental fitness.
Addressing this, Biden said he believed “based on polling” that he would have won, though he acknowledged his age could have influenced his performance in office.
“When Trump was running again for re-election, I really thought I had the best chance of beating him.
Bumot I also wasn’t looking to be president when I was 85 years old, 86 years old,” he said.
“But I don’t know.
Who the hell knows?”
Biden’s decision to step aside paved the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the Democratic ticket.
Following her loss to Trump, prominent Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, suggested the party might have stood a better chance had Biden exited the race earlier.
A Nigerian online financial coach GehGeh during an interview with the Nedu podcast shares his sentiment on men sponsoring their female lovers through school.
He emphasized that training a lady through school has consequences that may backfire on the man in the long run.
The coach bemoaned the entitlement mentality of most girls who expect their men to provide for their every whim.
To him, settling the girl’s father and getting him a means of making money so he would provide for his daughter is a better option than spending directly on the girl.
As expected, most men agree with his view, and here are some of their additions to the subject matter:
dada olowo: Forget cruise! GehGeh too get word with deep point for mouth👌🏻📌😂

masterplan007us: He’s right. The one that doesn’t want your money is only pretending, but getting that money elsewhere. Be Believe. Nigeria can be likened to a Zoo these days.
